Steady: voice practice for new RBTs

New behavior technicians rehearse caregiver conversations and hard moments before they happen, then a Mentor gives feedback.

The Steady film

A short look at Steady, voice practice for new registered behavior technicians.

Transcript

The 40 hours didn't cover the doorway. Steady is the practice room for the conversations nobody trained you for. Caregivers, supervisors, and teachers respond like real people. Then a mentor scores you and tells you exactly what to say next time. Starting with the easy ones. Five minutes, out loud, on your phone. Steady. Practice before the session.

Steady is an AI voice practice room for new registered behavior technicians (RBTs) in their first ninety days. Techs rehearse caregiver conversations and hard in-session moments out loud with AI characters, then a Mentor gives feedback on what went well and what to try next. Steady runs on the same engine as RepRoom, rebuilt for clinical teams, and it's in pilot with ABA agencies.

Why new RBTs need reps

A new tech can know the procedures and still freeze when a parent asks, at the end of a long session, "Is this even working?" Those moments decide whether caregivers trust the team, and whether a new tech stays. Steady gives them a private place to practice before the moment is real.

What techs practice

  • First Days: a gentle starter pack, so a brand-new tech isn't overwhelmed.
  • Caregiver conversations: the session-end handoff, a worried parent, a request outside the tech's role.
  • Under pressure: staying calm and on-plan during a hard moment in session.

Built around scope of practice

RBTs work under the supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA, and many caregiver questions belong with the supervisor. Steady's Mentor rewards the tech who listens, stays in role and routes clinical questions to the supervising BCBA, rather than the tech who improvises an answer. We wrote more about this in how to prepare new RBTs for caregiver conversations.

What Steady isn't

Steady isn't BACB training or a competency assessment, and it doesn't replace supervision. It's practice: the reps between a supervisor's feedback and the next real session. For the BACB's current requirements, see what a new RBT's first 90 days should look like.

How agencies start

We're piloting Steady with ABA agencies now. A pilot starts with your onboarding plan and the conversations your new techs find hardest.
